Bridging between Scala & Python with GraalVM
Session Abstract
We will present our ongoing work to bridge between Scala 3 (& Kotlin) and Python 3 using GraalVM. We will explain how the interoperability was designed; how type hints map to Scala 3’s type system, how other Python 3 concepts translate to Scala, and our the progress to publish python wheels to close.
Session Description
Thanks to its rich ecosystem of libraries, Python 3 has become the most widely used programming language over the last few years. In this session, we will present our ongoing work to bridge between Scala 3 and Python 3 using GraalVM. We will introduce the architecture and key decisions of our design and demonstrate how Python 3 code can be safely used seamlessly within a Scala 3 project. The audience will learn how Python type hints are represented within Scala and how other Python concepts are adapted to Scala.
A key part of the ongoing effort is making popular Python libraries ready and available to be used within the JVM ecosystem using our tool. We will therefore report the current status of the ongoing work to publish the metadata necessary for the libraries to be used. The talk will also include practical demonstrations showing how python source code, and how the mentioned libraries, can be integrated with minimal boilerplate within Scala 3 projects.
At the end of the talk, the audience should be able to use all of the presented material and be able to build cross-language projects with all of their favourite Python libraries within their Scala 3 projects.
